Vietnam Veteran “Hutchy” spent his first five years out of the Army in the employ of the then Trotting Control Board of Victoria. A keen punter who’d put up the odds for his mates in Vietnam, he soon graduated to legal on course bookmaking and was a fixture at the Melbourne Showgrounds, Moonee Valley and numerous Victorian country venues as well as plying his trade in the UK.  

 

 Involvement in the media during this time prepared him well for his new career and with on course bookmaking waning in the mid-90’s, he established a huge following around Australia for over 20 years as the “Punter’s Pal” - on radio, Channel 31, Sky Channel and with his innovative "Hutchysays" form guides which was a must read for any punter
