Alan Galloway

2020 Inductee

The most successful stud master in Australia today, Alan Galloway has revolutionized the breeding industry in this country – perhaps the world.

Born in 1956 to Alan and Barbara Galloway, he inherited his father’s love of horses - in his early days, helping them with the breeding at their Adelaide foothills Alabar Farm.

After a stint in Sydney with the renowned Kevin Newman, where he was let know his talents were better off in the breeding side of the game, as an 18 year old Alan embarked on a trip to North America and Europe, garnering knowledge of how the world’s best farms operated.

With the help of his father, in 1979 Galloway Jnr brought the Alabar operation to its current base in Echuca (and subsequently over the border in NSW), and with his equine knowledge, business nous and marketing flair, established a new level for studs to follow.

The first person to use Artificial Insemination in Australia, at the start of this century Alan and Alabar expanded into NZ with a picturesque property overlooking the Manakau Harbour on the North Island and also has another farm, Tara Hills in Canada.

In the mid 1980’s Alan developed Equisoft, a computer program used worldwide for the management of horse breeding operations and in 2000 was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Australian Sports Medal for Significant Achievement in the Business of Australian Sport.

A daredevil in the true sense of the word, Alan has owned three aeroplanes and drove on the Formula 2 Grand Circuit, winning seven of nine starts in his first year as a speedway driver.

Always at the forefront promotion of Alabar and the Harness Racing industry has always been his forte, during his time Alan has stood or owned some of Australia’s finest stallions including Kentucky, Windshield Wiper, What’s Next, Fake Left , Safely Kept, Armbro Operative , Presidential Ball, Mach Three , Village Jasper and arguably his favourite, the all-conquering Art Major.
